Your favorite drink may contain more than just alcohol. Animal-based items can be used in the processing and filtration process in the trades of brewmasters, winemakers and distillers. Like what? When making the product—dairy, honey or even a whole chicken are listed examples. During the filtration process companies can use isinglass from fish bladder, gelatin, egg whites, sea shells, blood and other items helping remove impurities.
My boss downloaded the iPhone app version of this website. He has been a vegetarian for 26 years and unknowingly drank his favorite beer for years unaware that Surly was filtered using fish bladders. Oops, that hurts a vegetarian turn vegan.
